Understanding this recall

What happened

Publix is recalling Organic Whole Blueberries, frozen organic berries, because of potential contamination with E. coli O145:H28.

Why it matters

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC), such as O157:H7 or O145, can cause severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Some people, especially young children and older adults, develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure. Raw sprouts and produce eaten uncooked are known sources. Frozen berries are often eaten without cooking, for example in smoothies, so freezing alone doesn't make them safe.

Who should pay attention

Publix shoppers in AL, FL, GA, KY, NC, SC, TN and VA.
Distribution in the FDA report: Distributed in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
