Understanding this recall

What happened

Optimus Inc. (Marky's Caviar) is recalling Mon Sire Brie, a soft-ripened French cheese, after its supplier reported test results showing Listeria monocytogenes.

Why it matters

Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis. Healthy people may have only short-term symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea or diarrhea, but the infection can be serious, sometimes fatal, for pregnant people (it can cause miscarriage or stillbirth), newborns, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms can appear weeks after eating contaminated food. Listeria can also grow at refrigerator temperatures. Soft-ripened cheeses like brie are among the foods health agencies advise pregnant people and other higher-risk groups to be careful with because of Listeria.

Who should pay attention

Buyers in Florida, where the cheese was distributed, especially anyone pregnant, older or immunocompromised.
Distribution in the FDA report: Florida
