Why it matters

Most people recover within a week, but young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill. Foods eaten raw or uncooked, like fresh peppers, salsa, sprouts and powders, can't be made safe by the consumer. Fresh-cut produce and pico de gallo are usually eaten raw.
