Understanding this recall
What happened
Midwest Poultry Services is recalling Grade A in-shell eggs sold under several brands, including Kroger, because of possible Salmonella Enteritidis contamination.
Why it matters
Salmonella bacteria can cause salmonellosis, with diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps that usually start 6 hours to 6 days after exposure. Most people recover within a week, but young children, adults 65 and older, pregnant people and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill. Foods eaten raw or uncooked, like fresh peppers, salsa, sprouts and powders, can't be made safe by the consumer. Salmonella Enteritidis can be present inside eggs. Cooking eggs until the yolks and whites are firm, and not eating raw or undercooked eggs, lowers the risk.
